Earlier, India were out for 376. The second new ball was available in the morning of the second day of the first Test at the Chepauk Stadium and Bangladesh took it. They were desperate for an early breakthrough and Taskin Ahmed did exactly that, forcing Ravindra Jadeja to the wicketkeeper in the third over of the day. Jadeja could not extend his overnight score of 86 and in the process conceded his fifth Test century. The stand between him and Ravichandran Ashwin ended at 199. Ashwin eventually fell for 113 off 133.

Jasprit Bumrah broke India in the very first over of Bangladesh’s innings. Akash Deep then sent back Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haque in successive balls in the ninth over to leave Bangladesh in disarray at 26/3 at Lunch.

Ashwin and Jadeja helped India storm to the top spot on day one at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Thursday. They finished the first day with a score of 339/6 at stumps and built a solid foundation ahead of day two of the Test. The early wickets will be a wake-up call for Bangladesh’s impressive pace attack, whose initial period with the new ball had India reeling at 34/3.

Earlier on the first day, Bangladesh started the game with a bang thanks to the excellent opening of Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, who managed to keep the Indian openers calm and on the defensive right from the start. Mahmud was able to capitalise on this by picking up three big wickets in the first hour of play. Rohit Sharma was caught at second slip by his opposite number Najmul Hossain Shanto before Shubman Gill was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Litton Das. Mahmud made it three for India with a big one, prompting Virat Kohli to fish outside off stump and pass the ball to Das behind the stumps.

India were in trouble in the first 10 overs but Rishabh Pant was sent in for 5 to join Yashasvi Jaiswal. The pair took India to lunch without much damage as both counter-attacked and punished bad deliveries to put together a 62-run partnership in 99 balls. Pant fell soon after lunch though as a lazy-looking cut shot against Mahmud forced him to depart after a very good start, scoring 39 on his return to the Test team for the first time since 2022. Jaiswal kept up the scoring pace and scored his fifth Test half-century but was unable to consolidate as young Bangladeshi firebrand Nahid Rana found his stride and dismissed the left-hander for 56.

Bangladesh got their first wicket with spin soon after when KL Rahul fell victim to Mehidy Hasan Miraz after a good, sharp catch at short leg by Zakir Hasan. Bangladesh seemed favourites to end India’s batting with another wicket, but as the pitch softened and became more comfortable to bat on, India’s old guard combined to save the day. Chennai native Ravichandran Ashwin and long-time Chennai favourite Ravindra Jadeja made the most of their familiarity with the Chepauk ground, combining to form a blazing partnership of 195 runs and still do so. The duo attacked spin in particular, beating Shakib Al Hasan and finding plenty of runs against pace bowlers.

Teaming up at 144/6, Ashwin was the main instigator as he adopted an attacking approach against both the bowlers and the spin bowlers. On a softer pitch and with an older ball that didn’t do much off the pitch, the pair scored more than 5 per over in the final session of the day. Ashwin scored his sixth century in just 108 balls, in an innings that had so far included 10 boundaries and two sixes.
