Bio Innovation Corridor Established Between Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) and La Trobe University, Australia – ThePrint – ANIPressReleases

La Trobe University is ranked in the top one per cent of universities in the world. It has a proud and successful history in India, collaborating with higher education institutions and organisations on projects that benefit both countries and helping to develop India’s brightest minds through joint educational opportunities.

The Bioinnovation Centre, Bangalore was jointly established by the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India with the aim to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in the biotechnology sector.

Through the Bio Innovation Corridor, entrepreneurs, start-ups, researchers and investors from Karnataka and the Australian state of Victoria will be able to tap into the infrastructure, capabilities and networks of organisations and leverage them to collaborate and assess their Technology Readiness Level (TRL), Commercialisation Readiness Level (CRL) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL).

This will enable BBC portfolio companies and La Trobe scientists to test novel biotechnologies with applications in human health, medicine, food and agri-technology, as well as scale up the project, obtain regulatory approvals and conduct customer trials in both states.

Dr Mohamed Adil AA, Managing Director, Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre, said BBC supports interdisciplinary development of research and innovation towards entrepreneurship by generating jobs, wealth and prosperity and supporting communities by creating employers rather than employees.

He said, “The Bio Innovation Corridor between Karnataka and Victoria is a strategic partnership that will support market access, mentoring, collaboration and investment in the life sciences sector. By connecting researchers, entrepreneurs and industry leaders from both regions, they aim to accelerate innovation leading to global unicorns.”

La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Theo Farrell, said: “We are delighted to announce the launch of the Karnataka-Victoria Bioinnovation Corridor and to offer the skills, infrastructure and capabilities of La Trobe University to startups, entrepreneurs and researchers associated with the Bioinnovation Centre in Bangalore.

“La Trobe University has a vision to develop a research and innovation ecosystem through co-location opportunities, including at our University City of the Future on our Melbourne campus in Bundoora and across four regional campuses in Victoria.

“This demonstrates our commitment to opening up opportunities for Karnataka-based entrepreneurs and startups to establish their R&D, innovation, product development and commercialisation hubs in partnership with La Trobe through a range of innovative business partnership models to access the Australian market.”

Professor Farrell said La Trobe recently launched a purpose-built Biological Innovation Centre, which will help start-ups develop new technologies in medical technology and drug delivery.

The MoU was signed by Prof. Farrell and Dr. Mohamed Adil during the Victoria Connect event held in Bengaluru on 19th September 2024 and aimed to showcase collaboration opportunities between Victoria and Karnataka in the higher education and value-added technology sectors.
