US Takes Steps to Ban Chinese Technology in Autonomous Vehicles

The U.S. Commerce Department is poised to propose a ban on the use of Chinese software and hardware in autonomous vehicles on U.S. roads, citing national security concerns, sources told Reuters on Monday.

The Biden administration has raised concerns about Chinese companies collecting data on American drivers and infrastructure, as well as potential foreign manipulation of connected vehicles. The proposed rules would ban the import and sale of Chinese vehicles equipped with key communications software or automated driving systems or hardware components.

The department will allow a 30-day public comment period before finalizing the rule, the sources said. The rule is expected to introduce software bans starting with the 2027 model year, while hardware bans would take effect in January 2029. The Commerce Department declined to comment on the matter Saturday.
