India Today Energy Summit | Green Power Shift

ANDAs part of its ambitious green goals, India aims to reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 45 per cent from 2005 levels and achieve 50 per cent of electricity generation from non-fossil fuels by 2030 as part of an overall path towards net zero emissions in the long term. The progress and challenges were monitored by key stakeholders from the federal government — Cabinet Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Pralhad Joshi, along with Secretary for Renewable Energy Bhupinder Bhalla — who joined forces with 20 power CEOs and eight experts at the India Today Energy Summit 2024 on September 6. Underlining the delicate balance between traditional energy sources and growth in renewable energy, the summit also highlighted key enablers such as grid modernisation and regional connectivity. As the world’s third-largest consumer of oil, India faces a unique challenge: reducing energy imports while increasing domestic production and simultaneously shifting to cleaner alternatives like solar and wind. The path to 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 is strewn with obstacles, from land acquisition to financing and storage technologies. Discoms, often overlooked pillars of the energy sector, took center stage as experts recommended much-needed reforms to boost efficiency and attract investment. The summit was a crystal ball, offering glimpses of a dynamic energy future driven by policy reforms, innovation, regional cooperation and infrastructure expansion.
