Delta-8, New Jersey Hemp: What You Need to Know About the New Law

Delta-8 Threats.

Bruce Ruck, executive director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers University New Jersey Medical School, said it is important to regulate the drug Delta-8 because it can pose serious risks.

“We’ve had children and adults who have had side effects from these products, we’ve seen people develop disorientation, hallucinations,” he said. “We’ve had a number of people who have had to be admitted to hospital.”

He said the poison control center has seen about 16 cases this year of people suffering side effects after consuming Delta-8 products. Last year, there were about 45 cases.

He said it makes sense to limit sales of intoxicating cannabis products to retail outlets.

“It will definitely reduce the number of kids who are dealing with it, it will reduce the number of people who are buying it who don’t realize what they’re buying,” Ruck said.

Moriarty said that several years ago, a 14-year-old boy from Gloucester County ate an entire box of Delta-8 jelly beans, went into the woods and began having out-of-body experiences.

“He knew he was there but he couldn’t move his arms,” Moriarty said. “He was in that area for 11 hours that night and they found him after a manhunt. He was blue, in shock and could have died.”

The Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration have also taken a dig at companies that sell Delta-8 products in snack-style packages, saying there have been multiple cases of children accidentally eating the products and ending up in the hospital.

For this reason, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent a warning letter to Levittown-based Hippy Mood, stating that their products, such as “Frutti Rocks Delta-8 Cereal” and “Doweedos Delta-8 Edible Chips,” violate federal trade law.

“I have seen many such products in packaging that give the impression that they are sweets, some of them even stealing logos and brand designs of famous sweet manufacturers,” he said.
