3 of 4 Birmingham mass shooting victims identified; 17 others injured

Authorities have released the names of three of the four people killed in a shooting that occurred in a popular Birmingham entertainment district in a series of automatic weapons fire.

Police identified the victims as Anitra Holloman, 21, Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27.

The fourth victim has not yet been formally identified, Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.

Seventeen other people were injured when gunfire erupted outside the Hush Lounge in Five Points South.

It was just after 11 p.m. Saturday when 911 dispatchers in Birmingham received several reports of shots fired.

While officers were en route, they learned that multiple people had been shot and the incident was quickly deemed a mass casualty incident.

Hollomon, Booker and McCaine were found unconscious on the sidewalk. Within moments, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers from other city police stations were called in to help deal with the chaos, while at least 50 Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service officers (15 units) also attended the scene.

Police quickly cordoned off a block-wide area as hundreds of people stood amid the chaos, many crying and trying to find loved ones and friends.

Witnesses say many of the victims were standing in line outside Hush when the shots were fired.

The injured were treated at UAB Hospital, Princeton Baptist Medical Center, Brookwood Medical Center and St. Vincent’s.

The victim, whose identity was not revealed, died in hospital.

Fitzgerald said the 17 surviving victims — both men and women — suffered injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to critical.

Police said the shooters likely used machine gun conversion devices. More than 100 shell casings were collected at the scene.

Police Chief Scott Thurmond said it appears one of the victims was targeted — a contract killer — and the other victims were random victims.

As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been announced.

In total, Birmingham will see 122 homicides and three mass shootings in 2024.
