  • After years of testing, Microsoft’s Windows app is finally here. It’s a complete replacement for Microsoft Remote Desktop.
  • This app lets you access Windows features from other devices like iOS devices, Mac, iPad, and even web browsers.
  • Apple users can find it in the App Store, and Windows users can find it in the Microsoft Store.

New

Microsoft has finally launched a “Windows app” for macOS, iOS, iPadOS, web browsers, and Windows.

The new application is replacement for Microsoft Remote Desktopthat gives users access to a copy of their Windows system on another desktop or server. The new “Windows App” does something similar, but with more benefits and more alternative devices to choose from.

It is also important to note that the new application is a complete replacement for Microsoft Remote Desktop. So, if you already have the latter installed, it will automatically update to Windows App.

About the application

With Windows App, you no longer have to be at your Windows desktop to access unique Windows features – they will now be available on other devices of your choice.

“This unified app serves as a secure gateway to connect Windows to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop, Remote Desktop Services, Microsoft Dev Box, and more.” – Hilary Braun, senior product manager for Windows 365 at Microsoft

What sets it apart from the previous Remote Desktop app is better options for customizing the home screen, support for multiple monitors, USB redirection, and better device management for IT admins. Even managing multiple accounts and switching when needed is quite convenient here.

The app also supports Windows 365 for Firstline Workers and Microsoft’s “Relayed RDP Shortpath” protocol, which is used to enable remote desktop on networks that don’t normally allow it.

What’s more, you can do much more with it, for example:

  • Microsoft Teams Optimization
  • Dynamic display resolutions and scaling
  • Adjusting display resolution
  • Redirecting devices such as webcams, storage devices, and printers

Apple users will find the app in the App Store, while Windows users can access it in the Microsoft Store. If you don’t want to install the app on your device (for storage reasons, etc.), you can access it directly from the web.
