East Midlands Railway is making changes to its mobility scooter policy

East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced significant changes to its mobility scooter policy, which aims to improve safety, flexibility and convenience for customers who use them on trains.

The updates are designed to better support a diverse range of mobility scooters and are the result of consultation with accessibility experts, customers and the safety team at EMR.

Customers using mobility scooters must obtain permission before boarding.

Authorization applications can be submitted online, by phone, email or mail through the EMR Customer Service Center.

Passengers who need to travel before their EMR application is processed can obtain a temporary permit at the following stations: Derby, Leicester, Lincoln, Nottingham or Sheffield.

Scooter users must comply with safety regulations which state that their maximum weight must not exceed 300 kg (47 stone), including the weight of the passenger.

If the scooters do not have anti-tipping wheels, they must be manually lifted onto the train. In addition, the scooters should have sealed batteries.

Three-wheeled and four-wheeled scooters are permitted, provided they meet size requirements.

At major EMR stations, staff can assess the safety of mobility scooters for train journeys. At unstaffed stations on the EMR network, a marked frame on the platform helps train staff check that scooters meet the size regulations for safe travel.

The framework provides guidelines on the allowable dimensions of scooters on EMR trains, and EMR personnel may be provided with a hand-held measuring tool.

Customers whose scooters do not meet the EMR criteria will be barred from boarding. However, foldable scooters are now allowed as luggage without the need for a permit.

Permits are valid for 24 months and require renewal each time you change scooter model.

Full information is available on the EMR website.
