Nearly 450,000 GM models need to be recalled due to brake fluid warning light problem

  • GM announces recall of 450,000 trucks and SUVs due to brake fluid warning light failure.
  • The issue affects Chevrolet Silverado, Tahoe and Suburban models, as well as several GMC and Cadillac models.
  • The software update will resolve an erroneous brake fluid level warning issue in affected GM vehicles.

GM is recalling nearly 450,000 pickups and SUVs in the United States because their low brake fluid warning light may not work. While GM says the affected vehicles will still meet stopping distance requirements in the event of a brake fluid leak, the vehicles still need to be repaired.

The automotive giant says an incompatibility between the electronic brake control module (eBCM) software and the eBCM calibrations means the brake fluid warning light may not illuminate when a leak starts, as it should. As a result, brake performance may deteriorate before the light illuminates, increasing the risk of a crash.

GM notes that the warning light will continue to operate until there is a complete loss of brake fluid.

A total of 449,671 vehicles in the United States are covered by the recall. They include 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models manufactured between January 4, 2023, and April 27, 2023, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe manufactured between October 28, 2022, and July 24, 2024, 2023-2024 Chevrolet Suburban manufactured between October 28, 2022, and July 24, 2024, and 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 models manufactured between January 11, 2023, and April 26, 2024.

The recall also applies to other vehicles, including the 2023-2024 GMC Yukon, manufactured from October 28, 2022, to July 24, 2024, the 2023-2024 GMC Yukon XL, manufactured from October 28, 2022, to July 24, 2024, the 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade, manufactured from October 28, 2022, to July 24, 2024, and the 2023-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV, manufactured from August 19, 2022, to July 24, 2024.

A GM engineer first noticed the issue on April 18, 2024, and reported it to GM’s internal Speak Up For Safety program. GM is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this defect.

Owners of affected models will be notified of the recall starting October 28. A software update can be performed by dealers to resolve the issue, while affected models that support over-the-air updates will be repaired remotely.
