The last full-size Kmart store in the continental United States is set to close in October.

It’s the end of an era for one of the most iconic big-box retailers: the last full-size Kmart store in the continental United States is set to close in October.

A store employee contacted by phone on September 22 confirmed that the Kmart store at The Hamptons in Bridgehampton, New York, will permanently close on October 20, 2024.

Only two Kmarts remain in the 50 states: a full-size store that is closing in Bridgehampton, New York, and a smaller-format store in Miami, Florida, that remains open. The Miami store is more like a grocery store, selling basic necessities in a much smaller footprint than a traditional big-box Kmart.

Kmart has been slowly closing stores for years since its 2005 merger with Sears under the leadership of hedge fund CEO Eddie Lampert. Sears Holdings, the parent company of Kmart and Sears, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.

The last Kmart in southern New England in Hyannis closed in early 2021. In 2022, there will be only three Kmarts left in the continental U.S.

Kmart does, however, have a few locations open outside the 50 states in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam.

One New England Sears store remains open at South Shore Plaza in Braintree.
