Nothing Official Announces Android-Based OS 3.0 15: New Features, Roadmap, and More

Nothing has finally released its new OS 3.0 alongside the Nothing Ear Open. During the launch event, the company revealed that OS 3.0 will feature several new AI features, a new Nothing Gallery app, and a few customization features. The AI Smart Drawer mimics the iPhone-like app library. Earlier, CEO Carl Pei had hinted at the release date of Nothing OS 3.0, and now it has been confirmed that the open beta will be available in early October, while the stable version will be available by the end of December 2024. Let’s take a look at the list of features coming to the new Nothing OS 3.0.

Nothing 3.0: New Upcoming Features

No built-in gallery: The built-in gallery app in Nothing OS now integrates seamlessly with the camera app, improving performance by about 1.4 seconds compared to the previous setup. Additionally, the camera app processes HDR and portrait effects about 25 percent faster.

New user interface: The update brings new UI elements, including font changes, Dot Matrix, and transparency effects. You’ll notice new Dot animations in fingerprint recognition and charging indicators. The N-dot font is now paired with the Sans Serif font for improved readability. The Dot Matrix UI is now extended to apps like the Weather app, with animated weather icons. The brand has also hinted at new, transparent software elements designed to improve data visualization.

Application drawer: Nothing OS 3.0 introduces AI-powered app categorization, placing frequently used apps at the top. This feature, called Smart Drawer, works similarly to iOS’ App Library and can be enabled as an option. The traditional app drawer remains the default, where you can also pin your favorite apps to the top.

Clock and widget on lock screen: Nothing OS 3.0 brings additional clock faces and widgets for the lock screen. New designs include N-Type, N-Dot, and a clock reminiscent of the one used in London Underground stations.

Home screen widget: Nothing OS 3.0 offers over 20 built-in widgets, including a countdown widget. It also allows you to share specific widgets, such as the pedometer, with other Nothing OS users for a more connected experience. People can respond to shared widgets with stickers.

Nothing OS 3.0: Release Date

The Nothing OS 3.0 beta is set to begin rolling out in October, though details on which phones will be eligible have yet to be confirmed. The new OS 3.0 release is expected to likely start with the CMF Phone 1, followed by the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus, Nothing Phone (2a), and Nothing Phone 1. A stable release is planned for December.
