Hot on the heels of the rumored release of the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D, we now have some details on several of MSI’s upcoming X870 and X870E motherboards. This is quite exciting as the X870 family is the first new chipsets since the Socket AM5 platform was first introduced to the market. While AMD hasn’t announced a release date for its 3D V-Cache-equipped Ryzen 9000X3D processors, the launch of its new AM5 socket chipsets would certainly be a good time to ditch them.

Right now, MSI has officially released information about its two upcoming motherboards, X870 and X870E. The top of the range model will be the MEG X870E GODLIKE, which is incredibly feature-rich as expected from the GODLIKE brand. Connectivity is provided by Marvell 10-GbE LAN, Realtek 5-GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7 and USB 4 support. The board’s rear I/O cluster is packed with USB goodness, with two 40G USB ports that support DisplayPort output and then a total thirteen USB-10G ports, 5 of which are USB Type-C ports and the remaining 8 are USB Type-A ports. There is also a 60W front USB-C port that allows you to quickly charge mobile phones and other devices.

Oh, and let’s not forget about the M.2 XPANDER-X SLIDER GEN 5 add-in card. This will allow users to easily add two PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 SSDs. It’s a 1-slot card with two heatsinks and a fan to keep your fast Gen5 drives cool. While not a rear-pluggable motherboard, the MEG X870E GODLIKE also features the EZ Bridge and its accompanying EZ Control Hub, which allows you to move all your fans and RGB connections to the back of the board with a single cable.

Next up is the MPG X870E CARBON WIFI, which will be the choice for those looking for a premium gaming experience without emptying their pockets on the GODLIKE above. While it obviously doesn’t have all the features of this board, it does come with an 18-phase “Duet Rail Power System” and intelligent 11A power stages. This, combined with extended heat pipe cooling for VRM, will enable this board to support current and future AMD Ryzen processors , and will also enable solid overclocking.

In terms of connectivity, it “only” has 5G and 2.5G LAN, but that’s still overkill for most current users. It still comes with Wi-Fi 7 and USB4, so users can take full advantage of next-gen devices like docking stations, hubs, and blazing-fast storage. X870E CARBON WIFI has eleven USB ports, but only 2 of them are USB Type-C ports; the rest is USB Type A. It retains the front USB-C connector for charging devices, but this is only rated at 27W.

The X870 motherboards are X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI and X870-P WIFI. Both of these motherboards feature a 14-phase “Duet Rail Power System”, but TOMAHAWK comes with 80A intelligent power stages. Both boards come with Wi-Fi 7, 5G LAN and multiple USB Type-C ports, including USB 40Gbps. The X870 boards will be the more budget-friendly models, but since they’re based on the X870 chipset, they’re still relatively high-end on the market and are a more than adequate motherboard even for performance-oriented gamers.

While there’s no official release date for the all-new MSI X870 and X870E motherboards, we can’t wait to see them in the wild and see what they’re truly capable of. There’s no doubt that gamers, AI enthusiasts, and those who like to get the most out of their hardware will be eager to get their hands on one of these motherboards when they launch.
