Samsung Galaxy S24 FE in practice: Galaxy AI Deja Vu

Samsung mid-range “fan edition” phones. have always been a way for the Korean tech giant to make some of its most attention-grabbing features available to customers who don’t want to spend $800 to $1,000 on flagship phones. This time for Galaxy S24 FESamsung is evening out the sides by flooding its phone with all of this year’s Galaxy AI features.

The new $650 FE phones effectively include everything Samsung has introduced to its mobile devices in 2024. I liked it Galaxy S23 FE due to the “less is more” approach. For newly announced S24 FE, Samsung has instead focused on implementing as many of the AI software features that came with the S24 series as possible, including the S24 Ultra and the Galaxy Z Flip AND Fold 6. This includes several photography features such as Portrait Studio, Generative Editing, and Sketch to Image, allowing you to add AI-generated objects to existing photos.

These are all features I’ve used before, and since I don’t have much use for the AI image features beyond putting silly images of purple dinosaurs in front of group photos, I don’t see much joy in it. I tried Sketch to Image on the Galaxy S24 FE, and while it works as well as before, drawing is much more difficult than on the larger screen of the S24 Ultra with the included S Pen.

Samsung Galaxy S24 FE has slightly changed hardware

The new phones use a 4nm Exynos 2400e processor compared to last year’s Exynos 2200. This should be enough to support artificial intelligence features on the device, such as Live Translate for translating phone calls. Otherwise, it will use the cloud for features such as the translator’s personal translation or the AI Composer text generator. I tried Translator again on the S24 FE and after several attempts to understand my French speech in a noisy, crowded room, I gave up.

Another slight improvement over last year is slightly smaller bezels, which allow for more screen real estate on the 7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. That’s certainly up from last year’s 6.4-inch screen, but it doesn’t really feel that much bigger in the hand.

Cheaper phones will get some of the S24’s camera sensors and photo editing software. It has a 50MP wide lens, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3x zoom, and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. The Korean tech giant promotes the ProVisual engine and Nightography they were the first in the S24 series and will come to this year’s fan edition. Basically, it’s a set of AI-powered tools that can fix the framing of a photo or remove unwanted noise. It is similar to the latest Magic Editor suite Google Pixel 9 phones that use pixel replacement to make everything look more professional.

Samsung also has a new Galaxy Watch FE with FTE connectivity

The hardware performance boost brings several new benefits, including the promise of improved ray tracing capabilities. The new phone has a larger vapor chamber, which should help keep things cool, as well as a larger 4,700 mAh battery compared to the S23 FE’s 4,500 mAh. It will take more time to determine whether a larger battery provides longer battery life, especially if it is processing all the new AI features.

The Galaxy S24 FE costs $650 and is available in blue, charcoal gray, gray or a very subtle mint green. It is available for pre-order now, and sales will begin on October 3.

Samsung also promoted its new LTE version of the existing one Galaxy FE watch. Additional connectivity allows you to answer calls and track metrics in the Samsung Health app without having to use your phone. It costs $250 compared to the original version’s $200, so if you just need basic features without additional connectivity, you may not need to spend the extra $50. This watch will also go on sale on October 3.
