NIA Nabs ULFA-I key A fighter in an explosive device casing

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a critical suspect in the United Liberation Front of Assom-Independent (ULFA-I) case of planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at various locations in Assam. Girish Barua, also known as Gautam Baruah, was arrested in the suburbs of Bengaluru where he was evading authorities, the NIA revealed in a press release.

The case was filed by the NIA in September and related to the deployment of explosive devices across Assam by banned terrorist group ULFA-I. These actions were part of an armed protest against Independence Day celebrations in India. “The accused was associated with a group of ULFA-I operatives who, under the guidance of top leaders of the group, strategically deployed IEDs in North Lakhimpur district of Assam,” the NIA said.

After his arrest, Barua was produced before the Special NIA Court in Bengaluru on September 25. The court ordered his remand and subsequent production before the Special NIA Court in Guwahati, Assam. Investigations into this matter are ongoing. (OR)
