Springfield is considering changing its garbage ordinance and introducing higher fees for mattress disposal

SPRINGFIELD — The city is considering doubling the cost of disposing of mattresses and box springs after a two-year increase in their numbers exceeded budget.

Officials also want to implement a penalty system, crack down on radioactive waste disposal and shorten the time people can leave “free” items on the curb.
