The most popular stories in the game

  • This is Clemson’s most common injury to a team preparing for a game this season. Coach Dabo Swinney said he’s “totally” comfortable with rookie winger Bryant Wesco Jr. playing against Stanford after Wesco missed most of last week’s NC State game due to pain (but could play if necessary). Beyond him, however, there are three key starters whose status is unknown: DE Peter Woods (leg/knee), WR Tyler Brown (ankle) and DT DeMonte Capehart (undisclosed). Additionally, top reserve offensive lineman Collin Sadler is dealing with a calf injury. Woods, Brown and Sadler missed the NC State game, and Capehart was injured during that game.

  • These absences obviously didn’t slow Clemson down much. Offense and defense work in harmony: The Tigers were the first FBS team in 20 years to finish the first quarter leading by 28 or more points in consecutive games. They led 35-0 against App State after one quarter and 28-0 after one quarter against NC State. And with quarterback Cade Klubnik in the game, the Clemson offense has scored on 16 of 17 drives over the last two games (15 touchdowns and one field goal). The Tigers’ starting defense was imperfect – especially in tackling and red zone defense – but it’s worth noting that they held NC State to seven points at halftime and 14 points through three quarters (mostly sophomores played in the game).

  • This will be the second meeting between Clemson and Stanford in history and the first as members of the conference. Cardinal was one of three schools that agreed last fall, along with Cal and SMU, to join the ACC for the 2024-25 athletic year. Stanford and Cal joined from the Pac-12 – which was on the verge of extinction after eight other schools jumped into the Big 12 or Big Ten – and SMU joined from American Athletic. The only other meeting between Clemson and Stanford was in the 1986 Gator Bowl (Clemson won 27-21).

  • Swinney has two big accomplishments under his belt and could accomplish them on Saturday with a victory. In his 16th full season and 17th full season as Clemson’s coach, he is one win away from reaching 100 career home runs (currently 99-9) and one win away from tying Bobby Bowden’s record for total career wins in the ACC program. Bowden won a total of 173 games at Florida State during the Seminoles’ ACC membership (since 1992). Swinney is currently 172-44 at Clemson.

Clemson vs. Stanford players to watch

  • Clemson WR Bryant Wesco Jr.: The slick true freshman from Texas is a top big-play threat and became the first Tiger to rush more than 50 yards from kickoff multiple times in three years against App State.

  • Clemson LB Wade Woodaz: Taking on the most important role of his career, Woodaz really impressed and outshined fellow linebacker Barrett Carter in the process. He started all three games and has 20 tackles, a team-high

  • Stanford WR Elic Ayomor: There’s a reason he’s quarterback Ashton Daniels’ top target. Ayomor is a matchup nightmare at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, and he had a program-record 294 rushing yards in a single game last year.

  • Stanford DB Mitch Leigber: The veteran started all three games at Nickelback this year, and last year he had a huge 71-yard interception return for a touchdown against Syracuse, which was the Cardinal’s first defensive TD since 2021.
