UK approves Amazon’s $4 billion artificial intelligence partnership with Anthropic

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) announced on Friday that it had approved Amazon’s $4 billion partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic, citing that the deal did not require further review.

The approval follows an initial review that is part of a broader global focus on Big Tech investments in generative AI startups. According to the CMA, Anthropic’s revenues and its combined market share with Amazon in the UK were insufficient to justify a detailed investigation under the country’s merger laws.

Amazon welcomed the decision, emphasizing that the investment in Anthropic is intended to support competition in the generative artificial intelligence sector. As part of the partnership, Anthropic will use Amazon Web Services as its primary cloud service provider and custom Amazon chips to develop its artificial intelligence models.
