The Cardinals are undefeated heading into this game, but have yet to face the level of competition they expect next weekend in South Bend. Last week, Louisville opened ACC play with a victory over Georgia Tech in what was its toughest test to date. The game was tied until late in the third quarter before the Cardinals created separation on a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

The Louisville offense was a good fit for the transfer QB Tyler Shoughwhich celebrates its 25th anniversary^vol birthday on Saturday. Sough transferred from Texas Tech last offseason and is entering his seventh varsity season. So far, he’s leading the Cardinals to a productive passing game: The team enters the week 18th in the standings^vol in the FBS in passing yards per game (308.0) and didn’t turn the ball over – in fact, Louisville is one of three teams that enters Week 5 this season without giving away awards (along with Indiana and Georgia). This weekend, this offense will face a formidable opponent in Notre Dame’s elite defense.

The Fighting Irish started the 2024 season slower than initially expected. Notre Dame went on the road to College Station and beat Texas A&M in one of the biggest games of week one, but then lost all momentum after a shocking, upset loss to Northern Illinois in week two. With that loss on their record, a second loss could knock Notre Dame out of playoff contention, even in a new era in which 12 teams have secured playoff spots. Although the stakes are high for both teams on Saturday, Notre Dame is in a must-win situation.

To secure the necessary victory, the Fighting Irish will rely on the legs and arms of their transfer QB Riley Leonardwho has so far been more productive on the ground than in the air. He had his first pass for a TD of the season last week against Miami (Ohio), but also added 2 TDs and 143 yards on the ground, helping an already strong Irish rushing game led by Jeremiah Love. Facing a Louisville team that has a stronger defense than most of its opponents thus far, Notre Dame will need to diversify its offense beyond just the run to be successful.

The advantage of the offense is its excellent defense, which can likely put the team in a good position for success. The Fighting Irish have yet to score 17 or more points in a game this season – they have 10^vol in the FBS in points allowed – and are just as strong in other key defensive statistics.
