Fall is Here: 3 Reasons Why You Need a Smokeless Fire Pit This Season

Whether it’s for atmosphere, warmth, cooking, or any other reason you might want to light a fire, something about those dancing flames makes a nicely controlled fire appealing. One of the biggest drawbacks to having a fire in your home is the smoke. So the best solution to this problem would be to get the file smokeless fireplace.

When Solo Stove was the brand that really popularized these products and as the hype around smokeless fire pits grew, I, like many others, wasn’t too sure if they were worth it. I had several different types of fire pits at home, but until a few years ago I had never used any of the smokeless varieties. Then it clicked and I realized how great the technology (or lack thereof) is that makes using fire pits the preferred way to start a fire not only for me, but for many other people.

These fire pits are more than just smoke-free and come in more sizes and styles than you might think. This allows you to enjoy a crackling, smoke-free fire with less effort and in more places than before.

Though Solo oven may be the most recognizable brand of smokeless fire pits, but it is not the only one on the market. When you look at the landscape of smokeless fire pits, you can see many choices. Breeo is another brand that is highly respected in the industry, but you can also find fire pits from well-known but unexpected brands such as Cookery AND Eastern Oak.

Of all the smokeless fire pit options available, they all offer the same thing: a fire without smoke. These fire pits operate using a double-wall approach with holes in the inner wall that draw clean air through the bottom of the fire pits. Then, using the heat generated by the fire, the air is superheated and, rising in the space between the two walls, escapes through the holes in the upper part of the fireplace and ignites fine smoke particles.

This creates a nice fire effect from the holes and ends the smoke before it reaches your face. When burning wood, there are always small pieces of material that do not burn and are the main culprits of smoke. So, using the science of convection, these smokeless fire pits create a secondary burn that eliminates most, if not all, of the smoke.

Remember that when you first light the fire, smoke will appear. Until the fire has really spread and the firebox has heated up, the fire does not produce enough heat to cause a secondary burn. Once everything is really burning, the smoke will dissipate.

What is worth knowing about smokeless fireplaces before purchasing?

With so many brands selling smokeless fire pits, in a wide range of sizes, styles and even shapes, there can be some confusion about which one to buy. Besides checking our list best places for a bonfireThere are other factors to consider when purchasing a fire pit.

Are cheap smokeless fire pits good?

As with most things you buy, sometimes you get what you pay for and sometimes you’re surprised. A cheap or inexpensive smokeless fire pit may very well be more expensive if its design is correct. By this I mean that both walls of the firebox must be properly welded and aligned, and the openings to allow air to flow in and out must be properly sized. As long as these things are done correctly, your fire pit should do a good job of removing smoke.

What may be missing from a cheap fire pit that you find in a more expensive option are the materials used. To make the product cheaper, some corners need to be cut. Generally speaking, this will be due to the quality of workmanship and materials. Thicker metal and/or lower quality steel may not only melt if the fire is hot enough, but also rust and decompose more quickly than a more expensive option.

Are smokeless fire pits only suitable for lighting fires?

Accessories such as the Breeo live fire pizza oven are perfect for increasing the functionality of fire pits.

Chris Wedel/CNET

Very not. In this category we can find a greater division between fireplace brands and prices. Cheap fire pits usually offer only one function: heat. Even then, you can find more ways to use your fire pit. Larger brands have begun to create accessories that enable further use of smokeless fire pits.

For example, Breeo offers great outdoor cooking accessories such as Grill facility for him Line X of smokeless fireplaces and Pizza oven with live fire which I love using in my Breeo Luxeve Fire Pit. Solo Piec also offers kitchen accessories ia pizza oven for smokeless fireplaces and even popcorn producer. All these accessories allow you to make better use of the fireplace beyond the atmosphere and heat.

Do smokeless fire pits give off a lot of heat?

Many people sit around a smokeless fire. Many people sit around a smokeless fire.

Smokeless fire pits inherently push heat vertically, but there is still plenty of heat. If you need more, some deflectors move heat horizontally.

Chris Wedel/CNET

Yes, a lot of heat comes out of these fire pits. This is due to double combustion, which involves burning smoke particles. A potential disadvantage of these fire pits is that the structure is generally higher and causes heat to be released vertically. This can cause some people around the fire to lose heat, especially those who are sitting.

Now I’m not saying that all is lost. There is still a fair amount of heat coming out of the firebox. There are ways to help push this heat horizontally rather than vertically. Solo oven AND Breeo both offer a heat deflector that as heat from the fire increases, it encounters a metal plate that pushes the heat outward rather than upward.

Whether your space is limited due to your home or just because of where you want to use your fire pit, there are options from extra large to extra small to fit all your needs. An excellent choice for those who want a wood-burning fireplace but have limited space is a fireplace Mesa with a solo stove. This 5.1-inch tabletop fire pit has the same features that make larger fire pits work, but on a smaller scale. This is a great solution when you want to start a real fire with wood, but without having to light a large furnace.

If you find yourself in a situation where you can’t start even a small fire like you can on Mesa, then maybe TerraFlame by Solo Stove is a better option. This uses clean-burning, indoor-safe gel fuel, so you can enjoy a fire anywhere. It’s also perfect for S’mores.

Just remember that regardless of what type of smokeless fire pit you choose, you should keep it clean so that it not only serves you longer, but also serves its purpose as best as possible.
