Techie loses Rs 17L in credit card cashback fraud

Pune: A 27-year-old software engineer lost Rs 17 lakh to a fraudster, who posed as an executive of her bank, under the pretext of cashback on her credit card.
On April 10, the crook took the details of the woman’s bank account and obtained a loan of Rs 14.87 lakh without her knowledge. They also siphoned Rs 2.10 lakh from her account.
The woman had filed a complaint application with the Pune cybercrime police. After the preliminary investigations, a case was registered with the Alankar police on Saturday.
An officer from the Alankar police said the crook contacted her and offered Rs 6,000 cashback on her credit card on April 10. “The suspect took the woman’s PAN details and OTPs three times to process the amount,” the officer said.
He said the woman later found that Rs 14.87 lakh was credited to her bank account. She immediately contacted the person, the officer said, adding that the suspect told her that the amount was mistakenly credited. “The woman again shared OTPs with the person. He transferred the amount from her bank account to another account,” he said.
The officer said the woman later found that in addition to Rs 14.87 lakh, the suspect also siphoned off Rs 2.10 lakh from her bank account.
The officer said, she again contacted the suspect and told him that she would lodge a complaint against him to the bank. “The suspect, under the guise of resolving the issue, took the woman’s email security code and formatted data from her cellphone,” the officer said.
When the woman contacted the bank, she got to know that the sum of Rs 14.87 lakh was a personal loan in her name and not someone else’s money, the officer said.
