Bills WR Curtis Samuel was rightfully placed on the B/R list in week four

When you look at the Buffalo Bills right now, the only thing that should come to mind is that they play like the best team in the NFL. They lead the league in point differential (+64) and are one of two teams to score over 100 points in three weeks. Fans may not have expected this type of production right away, but here we are.

One of the reasons their offense has been so explosive is because Josh Allen spreads the ball around the offense rather than focusing on just one player. The “everybody eat” mentality has worked perfectly for Buffalo’s offense over the first three weeks, and there’s no reason for anyone to question it.

On the other hand, it makes one aspect of the offense look like a waste of offseason investment. After the Bills allowed Gabe Davis to hit free agency, they were able to sign wide receiver Curtis Samuel from the Washington Commanders to a three-year contract worth $24 million. Samuel was added to the roster when Stefon Diggs was on the roster, but things quickly changed when Diggs was traded to the Houston Texans in early April.

Samuel provides great versatility and even had a career year in 2020 with Joe Brady as offensive coordinator. For the first three weeks, Samuel was very quiet regarding Buffalo’s offense.

Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon posted an article on five players who signed with new teams last offseason that already look like failures. Samuel rightfully makes this list due to his lack of production.

Allen targeted Samuel just seven times, a combination that resulted in six catches for 40 yards. Only two Bills wide receivers who have played for the Bills this month have yet to score a touchdown for Buffalo; Samuel and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. For comparison, backup Ty Johnson has more receiving touchdowns than Samuel this season.

While the Bills shouldn’t be afraid to spread the ball to multiple targets, Samuel isn’t on the cheapest contract where he can’t get the ball to him. The Bills invested money in signing him and need to get more production out of him and not just be a decoy.

Joe Brady needs to find a way to feed Samuel more food than he can in three games. Heading to A Sunday night football against the Baltimore Ravens, this would be the perfect spot for Samuel to make a splash for the Bills.
