The release of Batman 2, initially scheduled for October 2025, has been postponed October 2, 2026.

This delay, partly due to writer and actor strikes in 2023, extends the wait to four and a half years from the debut of the first film. Despite the extended timeline, this adjustment ensures that the production team will be able to create a sequel that meets the high expectations set by the original.

Batman 2 Cast

Andy Serkis will return as Alfred Pennyworth in

Robert Pattinson has been confirmed to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman, continuing to play the troubled hero. Colin Farrell will reprise his role as Oswald Cobblepot, aka the Penguin, and his character will develop significantly following his spinoff series – more on that below.

Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Zoe Kravitz are also expected to return as Jim Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth and Selina Kyle/Catwoman, respectively. The roles of other characters, including potential new villains, remain speculative and have not yet been officially announced.

Batman 2 Plot

Zoe Kravitz will return in 'The Batman 2'.

Plot details for Batman Part II are largely shrouded in mystery, but the film is expected to pick up where the first film left off, with Gotham City descending into chaos following the Riddler’s reign of terror. The Penguin’s rise to power will likely be a major storyline as he fills the void left by Carmine Falcone’s death.

There is also speculation that the Joker, briefly introduced in the first film, will play a larger role in the sequel and potentially form an alliance with the Riddler. Themes of corruption and the ongoing battle for the soul of Gotham will likely continue to be explored.

What else do we know?

Here are some other interesting nuggets we learned:

Penguin’s spinoff series is intended to bridge the narrative between Batman and its sequel. This series will explore the power vacuum in Gotham following the death of Carmine Falcone, focusing on Oswald Cobblepot’s rise in the criminal underworld.

Although the original Gotham PD and Arkham Asylum spin-offs were met with failures, Batman director Matt Reeves, who is also heavily involved in the sequel, has shown interest in expanding this universe further. With the Penguin series setting a precedent, other spin-offs exploring different aspects of Gotham or other characters may be greenlit in the future.

Batman – Part II and related projects will become part of the DC Elseworlds banner, separating them from the main continuity of the DC Universe. This gives Matt Reeves the creative freedom to explore darker, more grounded narratives without having to fit the broader tone or plot of the DCU.

Reeves emphasized that while the series and movies are related, each movie and show can exist on their own. Viewers won’t need to watch all of the related content to understand the sequel, but those who do will find a richer narrative experience.

Are there any other rumors?

Batman 2's release date is four years after the first film.

One of the few benefits of having Batman 2’s release date so far away is that it gives us plenty of time to speculate, and there’s no shortage of reports about the film in the rumor mill.

One of the most speculated villains is Hush, a character with deep personal connections to Bruce Wayne. Known for his psychological warfare and knowledge of Batman’s true identity, Hush could bring a more personal and emotionally charged conflict to the sequel. There is a possible connection to the first film that adds weight to these rumors. Bruce’s father unintentionally caused the death of journalist Edward Elliot, who is Hush’s potential father.

Other suspected villains include Clayface, the shapeshifting antagonist; Professor Pyg, known for his gruesome experiments; and the Scarecrow, who uses fear toxins to terrorize Gotham. DC Studios co-founder James Gunn denied the inclusion of Pyg and Scarecrow, as well as the rumor that Boyd Holbrook would play Harvey Dent/Two-Face. However, speculation about Clayface remains intriguing, especially with a series of films focusing on the psychological and brutal aspects of Gotham.

Barry Keoghan’s Joker’s brief appearance in the first film sparked serious speculation about his role in the sequel. It is unknown whether he will join forces with other villains such as the Riddler or emerge as the main antagonist. Reeves keeps details about the Joker’s involvement a secret.

There are rumors that Batman’s iconic sidekick Robin may appear in Batman Part II. This may mark Dick Grayson’s first appearance in costume since 1997’s “Batman & Robin,” although technically the Boy Wonder did appear in “The Dark Knight Rises.”
