The Digital Energy Solutions arm of L&T’s Power Transmission and Distribution division is a specialized group of power systems experts offering advanced network services, energy advisory services and system integration solutions to accelerate the digitization of the electricity grid in India, the Middle East and the US.

Management and control of transmission and distribution

As part of the order, an energy management system and related software systems will be implemented in 12 control rooms in southern India. These systems are being deployed in primary and backup configurations for the Southern Regional Load Dispatch Center (RLDC) and State Load Dispatch Centers (SLDC) in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana. The integration and implementation of these systems will be carried out without causing downtime to the existing system.

L&T DES will implement this control room upgrade using power system applications provided by the world’s leading OEM to monitor and control the power flow in the electricity transmission network in real-time to ensure reliable and safe operation of the network. The modernization works will benefit from L&T-Spark-CRIM and trade; (Control Room Integration Middleware) Platform for station data integration.

In another recent mandate, the L&T DES team will implement a power and transmission control room modernization in the Western US, with one of the most complex configurations spanning over 15 EMS hosts, deploying advanced applications to monitor and control power flow in real-world conditions. time. The scope includes the design and implementation of situational awareness of power and transmission grid operations to help operators and analysts improve network reliability.

L&T is already executing a number of advanced grid modernization and digitalization mandates in India, including modernization work at its national and regional transmission asset management centers, consisting of 13 control rooms across the country, covering 270 EHV transmission substations.

On the distribution network management side, L&T DES is implementing advanced distribution management systems in Mumbai and Vadodara.

Renewable integration and control

The L&T DES team is implementing L&T-Spark-HECS™ (Hybrid Energy Management and Control System) to monitor and control a 185 MW Solar, 254 MWH energy storage hybrid renewable power plant that L&T is implementing in Bihar.

Thanks to the rapidly developing construction of hybrid renewable power plants, the company is engaged in the implementation of solar energy storage power plant controllers for large renewable energy projects around the world. Currently, L&T-Spark-PPC™ (Solar Power Plant Controller) powers 6 solar power plants with multi-gigawatts of peak production capacity, ensuring full compatibility with the regional grid in India and Middle East regions.

A recent milestone was the launch of the 700 MW ArRass solar power plant powered by L&TSpark-PPC™, which monitors and controls over 200 PV inverters to ensure plant performance while honoring real-time deployment signals from Saudi Electric’s Central Region Control Center (CRCC) ) supporting reliable network operation with advanced control functions, including synthetic inertia.

In Puerto Rico, United States, the L&T DES team worked on an interconnection simulation study and substation control engineering task involving 8 interactive renewable energy hybrid substations consisting of solar and storage. After successfully completing the engineering design phase of the first substation, the L&T DES team in the US was awarded for the implementation of L&T-Spark-HECS™ (Hybrid Energy Management and Control System), thereby ensuring end-to-end delivery of the solution from design to implementation. The offered solution will be one of the first fully integrated implementations combining monitoring and control of solar energy, energy storage and substations, from a single platform with a fully functional Historian and Hyper Local Energy Forecasting, duly integrated with the weather monitoring system.

L&T DES has established the technical team as a specialized team of world-leading power system experts, offering advanced network services, providing complete simulation studies for renewable grid interconnection followed by interactive engineering and control design of hybrid renewable energy substations.

Advanced network and energy innovation services

L&T DES’s US operations continue to be a center of excellence in providing advanced consulting services and research and development tasks in energy systems and networks.

This includes resilience planning, feasibility assessment, simulation studies, wholesale power balancing authority services, cybersecurity compliance, etc. for various digitalization and decarbonization projects in the United States.

The L&T DES team will work on recently awarded grant projects for partners under contract with the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the US Department of Energy under the California Energy Commission (CEC) Grant Funding Opportunity GFO-20-305: California Social Microgrid – New a look at affordable mixed-use development in a carbon-constrained future. The goal of the grant is to build an all-electric, transit-integrated, affordable and supportive community. Highlights of this demonstration include the first scaled two-way electric vehicle charging in the U.S. and the world’s first 95-100% load-bearing residential community. Ultimately, this will serve as a new template for rapid utility interconnection under SB 410, the Powering Up Californians Act, intended to connect customers to the power grid more quickly.

Hybrid Energy Network Operation Center

L&T DES’s US operations are expected to provide a turnkey solution for 300 MW Solar Energy Balancing Authority services in the Western US. Balancing Authority (BA) services enable the integration of renewable installations while meeting NERC (North Electric Reliability Council) criteria administered by the regional reliability council for the reliable operation of renewable assets and networks. These services will facilitate multiple monetary value streams, enabling energy transactions within and beyond the local utility’s jurisdiction, ensuring the most optimal combination of trades and transactions, while meeting NERC and WECC (Westen Electric Council) reliability requirements. The project will be implemented by the HENOC (Hybrid Energy Network Operation Center) facility in Fairfield, California, USA. The facilities and staff involved in the project have been certified by NERC.
