Malaysia is exploring South Korean spectrum solutions to expand indoor internet coverage, says Fahmi

SEOUL: Malaysia will explore the use of different spectrums and frequencies, similar to those used in South Korea, to solve the issue of indoor internet coverage, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi noted that the effectiveness of this method has been confirmed in South Korea, which previously faced similar challenges.

“They (LG U+) informed me about the single frequency and spectrum solution. I have asked the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to review LG U+’s findings and recommendations. If it proves suitable, we will work on proof of concept,” he said in an interview with Bernama on Monday (September 30).

Earlier, Fahmi met with LG U+ Executive Vice President Johan Sue-hyun Chung and senior officials of the telecommunications company, where he participated in a briefing on the status of 5G network coverage in South Korea. Maxis CEO Goh Seow Eng was also present.

Fahmi was informed about an artificial intelligence (AI)-based application developed by LG U+ that aims to help users answer phone calls and detect potential fraud.

Additionally, he visited LG Sciencepark, the largest research and study complex in South Korea, where he observed the company’s innovations in the automotive and logistics sectors using AI technology.

Fahmi also urged Telekom Malaysia (TM) and LG U+ to explore potential collaboration on 5G deployment, especially for local industrial and enterprise companies.

Founded in 1996, LG U+ is a leading South Korean telecommunications company recognized for its advanced 5G, broadband and IoT solutions.

Fahmi is currently on a three-day working visit to South Korea, during which he will deliver the keynote address at the GSMA Mobile 360 APAC conference, explore new collaboration opportunities in the film industry, and meet with telecom executives to gather connectivity insights. – Bernama
