The Swedish government is considering a nationwide ban on begging – POLITICO

“We don’t think it’s reasonable for people to travel halfway across Europe and beg outside our stores,” she said, adding that Sweden already had begging bans.

The begging ban was one of the original election promises of the Sweden Democrat Party, which, together with the country’s three ruling right-wing parties, won a narrow majority in the 2022 national elections. The Sweden Democrats provide external support to the government.

An investigator has been appointed to examine how such a ban could be legally implemented – without violating international conventions and human rights – and present its findings to the Swedish Parliament at the end of June 2025.

Some members of the opposition Liberal Party said they would not vote for the ban. Lindberg, however, is optimistic.

“I do not rule out that next summer we will have a base so well prepared and balanced that other parties may consider supporting it,” she said.
