New urban routes bring with them new rules

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – New trails in Jonesboro require updated rules and regulations for the community.

The trail connecting Arkansas State University and downtown Jonesboro is almost complete.

Some areas of the project are already completed. New biking and walking trails were recently added near Union Park.

Mediation, bike lanes and sidewalks on both sides of Creath Avenue provide a much safer environment for resident Terry Pickens to walk his dog.

“It makes me feel really good. All I have to do is walk the dog as far as I can,” Pickens said. “It makes me feel safer.”

Parks and Recreation Director Danny Kapales said the public needs to know the rules to keep our trails safe and clean. He said the most important rule is to keep all motor vehicles in the lanes.

“If you’re going to implement a trail system, you can’t have people using them as parking spaces,” Kapales said. “We still see people riding on bike paths.”

Pickens said he worries about cars driving in bike lanes.

“There should be no cars in this area,” Pickens said.

Kapales said the city has added more trails than ever before in the last few years due to budget increases.

The new look of the road may confuse some drivers, but Kapales said the city is adding more signs to inform everyone about the new bike paths, trails, etc.

Trail down Creath Ave. will connect Downtown Jonesboro with Arkansas State University. Kapales said the project is almost complete.

“Now on this roadway, suddenly you can use all types of transportation and have a safe space to get from ASU to downtown and downtown back to ASU,” Kapales said.

Kapales expects construction to take several more weeks before the trail opens.
