As per the previous guidelines, students must obtain at least 50 percent of the total marks in the semester to be promoted to the next semester.

The decision was taken after a series of protests by students from different parts of the state who failed in their semester examinations.

It is estimated that nearly 8,000 students would benefit from this move.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, also in-charge of the Department of Education, welcomed the decision of the Tripura University and stated that the Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBB), the state’s only university, will soon take similar decisions keeping in mind the interest of the students of the University’s two affiliated colleges under the university .

” Keeping in view the greater interest of students, Tripura University has revised the Graduate Program Rules and allowed students to be promoted after each final examination up to 5th semester without any conditions. MBB University is also in the process of taking a similar decision in the interest of students of 2 (two) colleges affiliated to University. I welcome this decision of both universities and hope that it will definitely increase students’ enthusiasm to pursue their studies,” CM Saha wrote on his social media handle.

The student wings of both opposition parties, CPIM and Congress, opposed the decision, saying it would destroy the education system in the country.

Opposition by CPIM student wing – Students Federation of India (SFI) state secretary Sandeepan Deb told reporters, “We had earlier opposed the decision, saying that the current infrastructure of Tripura, as well as the entire country, would not allow the implementation of the NEP. We found that the students received the syllabus after a long time. There is a shortage of lecturers in universities. We believe that phasing out the detention system will have an impact on the higher education sector.”

Leader of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress, Amir Hussein, said: “This policy (NEP) will worsen the education system in the country. We believe that if educational policies continue in this way, the academic system in the country will soon collapse.”

Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Secretary Sanjit Saha said, “Keeping in mind the increased interest from students, Tripura University has revised the Postgraduate Program Regulations. ABVP Tripura believes that the University has taken this decision in the interest of students and to reduce the number of dropouts, increase students’ interest in studies. If it can be seen in the amendment to the regulation, only students up to the fifth semester were given the opportunity, and if they have to complete their studies, then until the end. rules must be followed.”

Sanjit Saha said that this decision was taken keeping in mind the future of the students and hoping that as a result of such a decision, the students can get many benefits in the future.
