China’s renewable energy boom is enabling the world’s biggest polluter to meet its climate goals

According to the Energy and Clean Air Research Center, China’s rapid implementation of clean energy has allowed the nation to achieve more ambitious goals and avoid the worst effects of climate change.

The world’s biggest polluter can cut carbon emissions by at least 30% by 2035 by continuing trends in the energy sector and expanding efforts in other industries, say scientists including Lauri Myllyvirta and Belinda Schaepe in a report released Thursday. They urged Chinese policymakers to build on the momentum of clean energy adoption as they prepare to submit new climate goals to the United Nations with other countries by February.
