Google is working on reasoning artificial intelligence, chasing OpenAI’s efforts

Google is working on artificial intelligence software that resembles human reasoning ability, similar to o1 OpenAI, marking a new front in the competition between the technology giant and the rapidly growing start-up.

Multiple teams at Alphabet-owned Google have made progress on AI-based reasoning software, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. Such programs are more adept at solving multi-step problems in fields such as mathematics and computer programming.

Artificial intelligence researchers are looking for reasoning models as they look for the next significant step forward in the technology. According to two people, Google, like OpenAI, is trying to get closer to human reasoning by using a technique called chain-of-thought prompting. In this technique, pioneered by Google, the software pauses for a few seconds before responding to a written prompt, while behind the scenes and unseen by the user it analyzes several related prompts and then summarizes the best answer. .

Google declined to comment on these efforts.

Google and OpenAI have been locked in an intense battle for AI supremacy, especially since the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, a popular chatbot that some investors fear will eventually eliminate the need for Google search. Google has taken various steps to regain its leadership position, including merging its top research labs into Google DeepMind and strengthening relationships between researchers and product teams.
