Road collapses near Bengaluru Outer Ring Road, diversion of traffic during weekday peak hours | Bengaluru

The incident took place near Kartik Nagar in Bengaluru’s Mahadevapura, which is usually crowded during peak hours.

Following heavy rainfall on Wednesday evening, part of the road on the Outer Ring Road collapsed, causing traffic disruptions on Thursday morning. Bengaluru traffic police moved in and diverted traffic to avoid major congestion.

The incident took place near Kartik Nagar in Mahadevapura, which is usually crowded during peak hours. Bengaluru Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) contacted X and wrote, “Part of ORR service road collapsed at Karthik Nagar. Traffic was redirected to the main road. Renovation work is ongoing and will be completed quickly.”

The incident exposed the condition of the Outer Ring Road infrastructure, where hundreds of multinational corporations operate. Social media users have once again highlighted the civic apathy in this stretch of Bengaluru. A user wrote: “Roads have been built, but perhaps due to lack of soil compaction, this is the first cause of collapse. Engineering solutions are available today, rain or shine. Adaptation needed.”

Another user jokingly said, “This should help with the tunnel construction project. So be it.

Meanwhile, the Congress government has said that it has taken the road infrastructure in Bengaluru seriously and its aim is to make Bengaluru a pothole-free city. Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar had earlier inspected several road renovation works and directed the officials to expedite the process.

Earlier, the Outer Ring Road Undertakings Association (ORRCA), Bengaluru, had called for immediate attention to the roads on the 17-km stretch of the Outer Ring Road, which has many IT parks. As mild rain causes huge inconvenience to commuters every day, ORRCA has released a list of issues in a number of areas requiring government attention. Areas where waterlogging is frequently observed and areas with many holes are also mentioned.
