Sensex loses over 1,800 points: investor’s wealth worth Rs 10 liters lost; Nifty fell below 25,250

Indian stock benchmarks fell in Thursday’s session due to weakness across sectors. The BSE Sensex fell over 1,800 points while the NSE Nifty barometer settled below 25,250. At 2.12 p.m., the 30-pack Sensex fell 1,814 points or 2.15 per cent to 82,452. The NSE benchmark fell by 558 points, or 2.16 per cent, at 25,238. Such was the decline in the domestic indices that around Rs 10 lakh crore of BSE market capitalization (m-cap) disappeared.

The sharp rise in crude oil prices on the back of Iran’s missile attack on Israel and Sebi’s tightening of F&O rules has weighed heavily on retail sentiments, paving the way for the long-awaited market correction. Domestic benchmarks have remained at inflated levels for some time, increasing the risk of a correction, Kotak Institutional Equities said.

Here’s a look at today’s market decline in numbers:

Investor assets worth Rs 10 lakh crore were lost

Investor wealth, as suggested by BSE’s M-cap index, declined by Rs 10.04 lakh crore to Rs 464.82 lakh crore as against the valuation of Rs 474.86 lakh crore recorded in the previous session. Frontline stocks such as Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Tata Motors contributed to today’s decline.
