Google for India 2024: Gemini Live update with support for Hindi and eight other regional languages

Google for India 2024 – the search giant’s annual India-focused event that showcases features and services designed for users in the country – was held in New Delhi on Thursday. During the event, the Mountain View-based tech giant introduced several new features and services, including new capabilities for its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Gemini chatbot. Last month, the company introduced a two-way verbal communication feature called Gemini Live, and it is currently being updated with support for Hindi and eight other regional Indian languages.

Gemini Live supports Hindi and regional languages

Hema Budaraju, Senior Director (Product Management) announced that Gemini Live is being updated with support for Hindi and other regional languages. The AI-powered feature allows users to converse with the chatbot in real time using natural language. Users can verbally ask the AI questions and it responds in a similar manner. The feature developed by Google DeepMind was first presented at Google I/O.

In August, the feature was first made available to Gemini Advanced subscribers. Later, the company made Gemini Live available to users of the free version of Gemini on Android devices. Until now, the feature was only available to English speakers.

Budaraju revealed that Gemini Live support is available in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Urdu. The chatbot will enable native language users to use a new functionality that can accept prompts in these languages and also generate verbal responses. Gadgets 360 employees had access to this feature in some of these languages.

Gemini Live can perform all the generative tasks of a text chatbot. This means that users can use it to ask additional questions without having to provide the entire context each time. Thanks to this, users can have a casual conversation, similar to a conversation with another person. Despite generating real-time responses, it lacks context-sensitive voice modulation and emotion expression capabilities like ChatGPT’s advanced voice mode.

To use Gemini Live, simply open the Gemini app or activate the Gemini assistant on your Android device. There they will find a new waveform icon placed next to the text box. Clicking it opens the full-screen interface for this feature. Users can start voicing their queries and the artificial intelligence will respond almost immediately. To stop or end a Gemini call, users can tap one of two buttons – Hold and End Call – located at the bottom of the screen.
