Let your iPhone read aloud what you can’t see

Apple iOS 18 offers many new features aimed at improving accessibility.

Among them, the improved Magnifier app stands out thanks to its innovative reader mode that helps you easily read small or dark text.

Before you can use the new Magnifier features, make sure your device is running iOS 18. Follow the steps below to check and update iOS.

  • Open Settings application on your device

  • Obtain General

  • Obtain ABOUT, AND next to it you will see the version number Software version.

  • Go to Settings

  • Obtain General

  • Obtain Software update

  • If iOS 18 is available, tap Download and install

  • Follow on-screen instructions to complete the update

Have you ever had difficulty reading something small or in poor lighting? The new Reader Mode in the Magnifier app in iOS 18 comes to the rescue. By simply taking a photo, this feature transforms all the text in the image into a crisp, easy-to-read page. Here are the steps on how to use Reader Mode.

  • Run Magnifier app on your iOS device. You can do this by searching for it in the Spotlight search engine or accessing it through the Control Center if you’ve added it there.

  • Once inside the Magnifier app, tap the icon Settings icon (or gear icon) in the top or bottom corner of the screen.

  • In the settings menu, click Catch to turn on Reader mode by flipping a switch.

  • Click on the left side yellow arrow in the upper left corner of the screen to exit.

  • Then tap Done

  • Now place your camera over the text you want to read and tap Capture button take a photo.

  • After taking a photo, you will see the option to apply reader mode. Tap on Reader mode icon convert text into a clear and readable format.

  • Customize your reading experience with customization font size, contrast AND background color by means of controls at the bottom of the screen. This helps improve readability, especially in low light conditions or with small fonts.

  • You can scroll the screen up and down read the text.

  • When you’re done, just tap X in a black circle in the upper right corner of the screen.

  • Then tap X in a yellow circle where it says close below to exit completely.

In addition to visual adjustments, Reader Mode also includes a text-to-speech option. Thanks to this, the application can read the text aloud, making it even more accessible to people with visual impairments or who prefer auditory learning. Here’s how to use Magnifier Reader Mode.

  • Run Magnifier application on your iOS device. You can do this by searching for it in the Spotlight search engine or accessing it through the Control Center if you’ve added it there.

  • Now position your camera over the text you want to read. Click Capture button take a photo.

  • After taking a photo, you will see the option to apply reader mode. Tap on Reader mode icon convert text into a clear and readable format.

  • Customize your reading experience with customization font size, contrast AND background color by means of controls at the bottom of the screen. This helps improve readability, especially in low light conditions or with small fonts.

  • Then tap Play button at the bottom of the screen to listen to the text.

  • Click X at the top right of the screen to exit.

  • If you want to save the text for later or share it with someone, tap Share icon to save or send a readable version of the text.

  • If you want to exit, tap the button a yellow circle with an X in the middle.
