Looking ahead to the next 20 years in India, AI will play a big role here: Google India CEO

New Delhi: After 20 years of existence Indiaglobal technology giant Google is optimistic about the next rounds here with artificial intelligence (artificial intelligence) playing a big role in this, India MD Roma Datta Chobey he said on Thursday, adding that the company is fully aligning its vision and strategy with the country’s growth and ambitions. In an interview with PTI, Chobey said Google believes artificial intelligence should be regulated, but in a way that strikes a balance between user benefits – which are “still in the early stages” – while also fostering innovation.

India is a very important market for Google, she said, emphasizing the company’s deep commitment in areas including artificial intelligence, payments, Google Pixel production and skills, among others.

To a question about concerns expressed by some Indian startups over alleged anti-competitive practices, Chobey said Google works “deeply and closely” with the country’s startup ecosystem and that millions of applications are hosted on platforms Google Play Store.

“As Google, we work closely with the startup ecosystem, and we make millions of apps available on Google Play… we also invest in training Android developers…

“So I think we have worked deeply and closely with the startup ecosystem in India and we remain committed and will continue to do so through the India Digital Fund… We have startup accelerators, we have dedicated AI startup accelerators where startups are given access to our advanced technology, work closely with us, and this work is constantly increasing,” she said.

Google has completed two decades of operations in India and is looking forward to the next 20 years, during which “artificial intelligence will play a big role here,” she noted.

“When it comes to artificial intelligence, we focus on three pillars. The first is how we use artificial intelligence to help every person in the country. The best way we, as Google, can do this is by using artificial intelligence to democratize information as well.

“When we talk about skills etc., it refers to opportunities. Secondly, we want to really play a significant role in growing the already thriving AI ecosystem in India by investing in infrastructure and scaling the AI engine. Of course, we will do all this very, very responsibly, in a sustainable and inclusive way,” she said.

The third pillar of Google’s AI strategy is to build the future, she added.

“…to create a truly thriving workforce that is prepared to succeed in an AI-powered world. This space is evolving and evolving rapidly, and we want to keep up with it. I also want to add that as part of the Google India team, I am very proud that there is so much work happening in India that is not just about solving problems for India, but about solving problems around the world,” Chobey said.

Google on Thursday unveiled a number of AI-powered innovations, announced Indian language support on Gemini Live and unveiled new updates to Google Lens, Google Maps and Google Pay at the tenth edition of the ‘Google for India’ event in New York Delhi.

Google’s top boss assured that India is and will remain an important market for the company.

“From Google’s point of view, India has always been a very important market for us. We have always solved solutions unique to India, collaborated locally with partners, talked about the ‘India Digital Fund’… We started Pixel (phone) production here. … I talked about GPay… India is a very important market for Google, both from a user point of view and from the type of research development that is taking place,” she said.

She said Google is aligning its goals with India’s growth and vision.

“Today we have over 10,000 Google employees working in India, for India and other markets. We are present in 5 cities, so we have many offices here, it’s really, really important… When it comes to India, always say yes – what’s good for India is good for Google…

“That’s why we are very precisely integrating our goals, our vision with what is really good for India, and we will continue to do that,” she said, adding that India will remain a very important market for the company.

Google is using India not only to solve local problems but also global ones, Chobey added.

The first Indian-made Google Pixel 8 devices started rolling off production lines in August in India.

“Mind your space…we’ll talk more about this. But we are really happy and proud to have started production of Pixel 8 in India. Of course, we now also have service centers in India Google Pixel 9 is available on Flipkart via Croma connections… Reliance digital connections… and so on. So we’re really investing in this space,” she said.
