Sony updates headphones and headphones to the Google Find My app

If you have one of Sony’s top-of-the-line earbuds and headphones – the similarly named WF-1000XM5 or WH-1000XM5 – an update is waiting for you in the new Sony Sound Connect app. (This is the rebuilt and renamed Listens Connect app that was released earlier this week.)

But before we say anything else, know this: the update process takes some time. For example, 40 minutes if you’re using an Android device, and up to an hour if you’re using an iPhone. Sony isn’t kidding, so take your time. And it’s not completely set and forget about it – you’ll have to pay some attention, if only to make sure you don’t go out of range when updating.

That said, this is also an update you’ll definitely want to download as soon as possible, especially if you’re on Android, as it adds support for Google’s Find My Device network on both models. The earbuds also feature Google Fast Pair and an Auto Switch feature that allows you (somehow – we haven’t tried it yet) to automatically switch between Sony’s new LinkBuds speaker, which was also just announced this week. Sony says the headphones will also receive some sort of security update.

Once you’ve done this, you can use the Find My Device app to help you find your devices. It’ll even make them play some audio, although that’s not very useful considering that by design, the headphones and earbuds should only be audible when you’re wearing them. But they’ll definitely set the tone right.

And that’s it. Again – and we cannot emphasize this enough – updating takes some time. But after launch, you will have version 2.3.1 for headphones and version 4.0.2 for earbuds. Once again, you’ll see why both earbuds and headphones consistently rank on our lists of the best headphones you can buy and the best earbuds this year.
