‘Menendez’ actor Nicholas Alexander Chavez talks about auditioning for ‘Monsters’.

Nicholas Alexander Chavez says his recent audition for the role of Lyle Menendez in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” was unlike any other he’s ever auditioned for.

“Usually on a callback there are four or five other people who play that role. But it was just Cooper (Koch) and me,” Chavez says, referring to his colleague who plays Erik Menendez. “And then Ryan (Murphy) came in and we had no idea who was going to be there, so it took us completely by surprise. They made sure we felt comfortable. We went there and shot scenes. I think with Cooper it was immediately electric. Ryan called us two days later and said he wouldn’t be on the show if he couldn’t come with us.”

Chavez says his preparation for the Netflix series included reading, watching and listening to everything he could about the siblings and their two trials. The Menendez brothers are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for the 1989 first-degree murder of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

Koch spoke to Eric on the phone the evening before the series premiered on Netflix last month, and then met with him and Lyle when he visited them in prison with Kim Kardashian. Chavez, like co-creator Murphy, has no such plans.

“As an artist, you can’t help but be morbidly curious about the people you play, and after living in that character and those circumstances for six months of shooting this project, I think on some level that’s the desire,” Chavez says. “But ultimately I realized that as an artist it was important to have the grace to release characters once they were completed. It’s a big part of my job and I kind of stick to it.”

Asked if he thought the brothers deserved a retrial, Chavez replied only: “I know there has been a lot of discussion about this. I’m really curious what will happen in the future. “I think it’s up to the United States judiciary to decide this.”

“Monsters” was still in production when Murphy cast Chavez in his other series, FX’s “Grotesquerie.” “During the last few weeks of filming ‘Menendez,’ I was also filming ‘Grotesquerie,’” the actor recalls. “I remember the night we were recording ‘Menendez,’ I got in a car and was taken to a hotel near where we were filming ‘Grotesquerie,’ and I was immediately committed the next day. I think I shot for five days after that, so it was really a project of one project of another. It was very cool to experience Ryan’s creative vision in two different worlds because they are very different.”

Travis Kelce makes his acting debut in “Grotesquerie.” “He is so charming, so charismatic, down to earth. And you can definitely see that this guy plays professional soccer for a living because he’s a team player,” Chavez says of his colleague. “He came with great cooperation. He performs with confidence. To be honest, I was very impressed that this was his first time as an actor.”

Does Chavez consider himself a Swiftie? “Am I Swift?” – he says with a smile. “You know, her music is contagious. And every time it appears, I dance to it. She’s having a great time and is just a great artist.

He thinks, then adds, “Okay, fine. “I’m Swiftie.”
