The discovery of a cap belonging to a man who had been missing for a week has given his family hope that he can be found, as police appeal for a camper to come forward.

Jack McLennan, 27, was last seen in the Ficks Crossing area, 175km northwest of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, on Friday October 4.

He was spending time with a friend, but reportedly left on foot between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. that evening.

A manhunt was launched after his disappearance on Sunday, which has now entered its fifth day.

Inspector Scott Stahlhut confirmed on Thursday that officers had found a pair of shoes Mr McLennan was believed to have been wearing at the time of his disappearance.

It has now emerged that search teams also found a hat near McAlister and McLucas streets in the Flicks Crossing area, believed to belong to Mr McLennan.

Police are also appealing to anyone who may have witnessed Mr McLennan before his disappearance, particularly anyone who was camping in the Ficks Crossing area at the time of his disappearance.

“The person police would like to speak to was traveling in a dark colored vehicle with a tent on the roof,” police said in a statement.

It comes after police released new CCTV footage captured hours before she disappeared.

In the footage, Mr McLennan was seen in a bottle shop on Lamb Street in Murgon at around 1.30pm on October 4 – two days before she disappeared.

He then got into a car with a friend with whom he spent the next few hours at Ficks Crossing before disappearing.

Inspector Stahlhut said the “promising” findings indicated Mr McLennan had not wandered far, but he reiterated police were still “concerned for his welfare”.

“This kind of behavior is very unusual,” he said.

The rescue operation was delayed by heavy rainfall which “affected our ability to move freely”, Inspector Stahlhut added.
