Pumped storage plant in Queensland reaches highest generation in 40 years – pv magazine Australia

Queensland utility CleanCo has set a new quarterly generation record at its 570MW Wivenhoe power station, eclipsing all previous generation milestones since the plant opened in 1984.

Queensland utility CleanCo has set a new quarterly generation record at its 570MW Wivenhoe power station, located 75km west of Brisbane, surpassing all previous generation milestones since the plant began operations in 1984.

Since 1 July 2024, Wivenhoe station’s two pumped storage plants have generated 199 GWh, exceeding the station’s historical quarterly average by more than 5.2 times.

Using electricity from the grid, the facility’s two 285 MW Francis turbines pump water uphill to the station, which then acts as a battery, capable of rapidly generating electricity and with a capacity of up to 10 hours of continuous power generation.

By capturing excess solar energy and delivering it when demand is greatest, Wivenhoe is putting downward pressure on electricity prices and ensuring the reliability of Queensland’s electricity supply as the state transitions to a clean energy future.

CleanCo chief executive Tom Metcalfe said Wivenhoe shows why pumped storage is a powerful asset in today’s energy market.

“This station plays a key role in supporting more renewable energy in Queensland, and the next-generation record highlights the importance of continued investment in clean energy solutions,” Mr Metcalfe said.

“As Queensland looks to a net zero future, CleanCo continues to deliver energy solutions that support the expansion of renewable energy generation and ensure our customers have access to reliable, low-carbon energy to support their decarbonization journey.”

CleanCo aims to support 1,000 MW of new renewable energy generation by 2025 and will achieve this by building, owning and operating renewable energy projects and supporting investment in other new renewable energy projects.

The company’s portfolio includes the emerging Swanbank Clean Energy Hub, 40 kilometers southwest of Brisbane, home to CleanCo’s first large 250 MW/500 MWh battery and 275 kV substation, in partnership with Tesla and government utility Queensland Energy Queensland’s Energy Yurik transition arm.
