The government has proposed regulations aimed at reducing water waste, with new mandates that set a bold goal: 50% wastewater reuse by 2031 for large consumers. These regulations will require entities consuming more than 5,000 liters per day to register with authorities and implement comprehensive wastewater treatment measures.

For new mass users, minimum reuse obligations will gradually increase. Residential societies, for example, will start with a 20 percent reuse requirement in fiscal year 2027-28 (FY28), rising to 50 percent by FY31. The environment ministry, of Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC) detailed these requirements.
