Saints test Tracy Walker III and Roderic Teamer

The New Orleans Saints recently signed several free agents for tryouts on Thursday, all of whom were at the safety position.

Veteran starter Will Harris injured his hamstring Monday night against Kansas City. An injury that head coach Dennis Allen said could put him on injured reserve for at least four weeks. The Saints have a few possible answers in-house with safeties Johnathan Abram and Jordan Howden, but with every opportunity to earn a starting spot during camp, neither has been able to secure a role at top of the depth map.

With a lot of uncertainty and the loss of depth at the position, it makes perfect sense for the team to explore its options. Here’s a list and quick description of each free agent the team signed for practice on Thursday:

Cook, 6-foot-1, 196 pounds, was signed to the New York Giants’ practice squad after going undrafted in 2023. He was quickly signed to the Carolina Panthers’ active roster later that year -there, posting 11 total tackles in 10 games with the team.

Teamer, 5-foot-10, 187 pounds, is a familiar face who spent the entire summer with the Saints. Teamer was one of the standout newcomers early in training camp, but failed to force his way onto the team after a short day.

6-foot-2, 214 pounds, Thomas began his career as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears in 2022, spending just over a year with the team. He would then make a stop with the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL, where he would eventually lead the league in interceptions for the 2024 season and before being immediately signed by the New England Patriots at the start of this season.

6-foot-1 and 206 pounds, Walker was drafted as a third-round pick in 2028 by the Detroit Lions. Walker would spend six years with the team starting in 43 games, totaling 398 tackles, 23 pass deflections and three interceptions. He was signed by the San Francisco 49ers earlier this year before being released by the team in September.
