Search continues for man wanted in crash that killed fifth grader in Nashville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Metro Nashville police continue to search for a man wanted in a crash that killed a 10-year-old girl and injured her mother over the weekend.

Police today positively identified Walter Daneris Zuniga (also known as Daneri Varela), a native of Honduras, as the driver of the red Nissan Sentra responsible for the fatal crash on Nolensville Pike Saturday evening.

The crash killed Emily Sanchez-Ramirez, 10, and seriously injured her mother, Laura Ramirez-Gonzalez, 28, while they were riding an electric scooter on the bike path.

MNPD obtained nine arrest warrants for Zuniga, including charges of vehicular homicide by reckless driving, reckless endangerment, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and tampering with evidence. The girl died Sunday from her injuries caused by the crash and her mother remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The victims’ family told WSMV4’s Dryden Quigley that the mother and daughter left Colombia and moved to Nashville about 10 months ago.

Emily was a fifth grader at Tusculum Elementary School and enjoyed swimming and playing with her friends. Her aunt said she was a calm and curious child. A fundraiser has been organized to help the family and can be viewed here.
