Convict arrested for drug peddling in Chandigarh Model Jail

During a personal search at Chandigarh Model Jail, police found 10.30 gms of ganja and 9.30 gms of white powder hidden in the convict’s underwear.

Taken to PGIMER for medical consultation, a convict was caught dealing drugs on his return to Model Jail, Sector 51, on Thursday.

During a personal search, police found 10.30 g of ganja and 9.30 g of white powder hidden in the convict’s underwear, police said, adding that the drugs were handed over to him at the interior of the hospital.

The accused, Danish, resident of Indira Colony, Manimajra, Chandigarh, was jailed after being convicted of kidnapping, abduction and sexual assault under the Indian Penal Code and POCSO Act.

On Thursday, Danish was taken to PGIMER ART center for treatment under the custody of ASI Surinder Kumar and ASI Sukjinder Kumar of Chandigarh Police. During the visit, officers noticed suspicious behavior from Dane, including when he was collecting medical reports in a busy area. They raised their concerns with prison authorities and requested a thorough search of the convict upon his return to the facility.

During the search, temporary guard Ram Kishan recovered 10.30 gms of ganja and 9.30 gms of white powder, suspected to be an intoxicant, which were concealed in Danish’s underwear.

The jail authorities handed over the seized substances to SI Sushil Kumar at Sector 49 police station. A case under Section 52-A (1) of the Prisons Act and Sections 20 and 22 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Sector 49 police station.

The incident was reported to the District and Sessions Judge, Inspector General of Prisons and the UT SSP for further action.
