Amazon’s cloud computing division, AWS, will invest 15.7 billion euros ($17 billion) in data centers in Spain’s northeastern Aragon region by 2033, the U.S. tech giant said on Wednesday.

The investment will create around 17,500 indirect jobs in local companies and contribute 21.6 billion euros to Spain’s gross domestic product over the period, Amazon said in a statement.

“This new commitment by AWS underlines the attractiveness of our country as a strategic technology center in Southern Europe,” Amazon quoted Spanish Minister of Digital Transformation Jose Luis Escriva in a statement.

The head of the regional government of Aragon, Jorge Azcon, announced in a message posted on the X social networking site that this is “the largest economic investment in the history of our region.”

Amazon AWS, an e-commerce pioneer, also dominates cloud computing and held 31% of the market at the end of 2023, according to Stocklytics.

However, rivals Microsoft and Google are gaining ground, capturing 24% and 11% of the cloud market share, respectively.

The race has become particularly hot since the implementation of the ChatGPT-style artificial intelligence that cloud companies offer to customers.
