Southern Power expands Millers branch in Texas

Southern Power, a leading U.S. wholesale energy supplier and subsidiary of Southern Company, announced the expansion of its 29th solar project, the Millers Branch Solar Facility. The Phase II expansion represents an additional 180 megawatts (MW) compared to the current 200 MW Phase I facility, which is nearing construction. The project has the potential to be expanded to a total capacity of approximately 500 MW.

A project in Haskell County, Texas, is contributing to the company’s renewable energy fleet powered by clean energy sources from California to Maine. Southern Power will lead the continued development and construction of both phases of Millers Branch. Phase II is expected to be put into commercial use in the second quarter of 2026.

Cisco, Juniper Networks, IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Cadence, Bio-Rad, PTC and a major healthcare company, with support from Sustainability Roundtable Inc. and collectively as members of the Net Zero Consortium for Buyers, have signed power purchase agreements with Southern Power for all environmental attributes, such as renewable energy credits (RECs), produced by part of the Phase II 180 MW Millers Branch solar plant.

With the addition of Millers Branch Phase II, Southern Power’s solar portfolio consists of more than 2,920 MW of solar power plants currently operating or under construction. Southern Power’s solar installations are part of the company’s 5,450 MW renewables fleet, which consists of 30 solar facilities and 15 wind farms currently operational or under construction.

This project is part of Southern Power’s overall business strategy of strengthening its wholesale business through the acquisition and development of generation assets under long-term contracts with contractors with strong credit support.
