The RNC headquarters was briefly closed after the discovery of a suspicious package

The Republican National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C., was briefly closed Wednesday morning after a suspicious package was discovered.

A police source told CNN the package contained two vials of blood, a Korean Bible and two ice packs. The motive was not immediately clear.

Shortly after 9 a.m. ET, an “All Clear” message was issued. The Hazardous Materials Team responded to the scene and the U.S. Capitol Police responded to the incident. On Wednesday evening, the US Secret Service announced that it would lead the investigation.

“All threats against individuals protected by the Secret Service are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” Matt Stohler, special agent in charge of the Washington Field Office, said in a statement published on X.

RNC Chairman Michael Whatley described the incident as a “disgusting attack” on Wednesday afternoon.

“Today, vials of blood were shipped to the RNC headquarters in DC. We are grateful to law enforcement who responded quickly and kept everyone safe,” Whatley said. “The lockdown has been lifted and staff have resumed their office duties as we remain undeterred and undeterred in our efforts to elect President Trump to the White House.”

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Wednesday that reports of the incident were “disturbing” and the White House would continue “to do what we have consistently done since, which is to condemn all political violence, threats and intimidation.” .

“And it is important that we continue to say this, this has no place in our politics, it has no place anywhere,” Jean-Pierre said.
