“I’m now in a committed relationship with my NuFACE microcurrent device – here’s why”

I don’t want to bother you, but in my years as a beauty journalist, I have interviewed many celebrities. Without a doubt, the most talked about product in these celebrity conversations is the NuFACE toning device. So why it took me so long to try this myself is beyond me. What can I say? Apparently I’m not the smartest microcurrent tool on the skincare shelf.

The thought of adding another step to my evening routine when I just want to lie in bed and read a book probably has an impact. Another is that I was skeptical that microcurrent devices actually had any benefits for the skin – I had heard mixed reviews. However, when the NuFACE device landed on my desk during a particularly indulgent self-care phase (I’m not the most patient and I’m in and out a lot), I decided to take it out of the box and give it a try, and I’m so glad I did.

Review of my NuFACE toning device

Outside of my trusty Foreo Luna cleansing device, my experiences with beauty tools have been more situational than long-term. My LED face mask is covered in dust and I’m not sure I ever charged my pore vacuum cleaner again. No shade – I know people who curse them, but I’m just too lazy. But with fans like Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid (to name just two), surely the hype around the NuFACE toning device couldn’t just be noise, right?

How to use NuFACE

The first step in your NuFACE journey is to apply the clear goo (read: “conductive gel”) that comes with the device to clean skin. My NuFACE allowed me to choose from multiple intensity levels, so I started with the lowest one. I moved the device across my jawline, cheeks, and forehead in an upward motion. The device vibrates about every five seconds to let you know when to move on from the section you’re working on – smart. In total, it takes me a few minutes to complete.

NuFACE recommends using the device five times a week for the first 60 days and then twice a week to maintain the results.

My first thoughts on NuFACE

Due to the microcurrent component, I wasn’t sure how NuFACE would feel on the skin. It was painless, but there seemed to be tiny sparks or vibrations under the skin, which isn’t much different than unplugging your phone charger from a dodgy socket, if you catch my drift.

I was pleased with how short the treatment was – nothing like ten minutes (looking at you, LED mask) – and when I woke up in the morning, I could tell that my skin looked more radiant after just one use. And what exactly did it do to my skin?

How do microcurrent devices work?

Even though it was painless, I wanted to know exactly what these little capsules were doing to my skin, so I searched for answers.

“Microcurrent works by delivering a low-intensity electrical current that mimics the body’s natural bioelectric currents, stimulating skin cells and increasing cellular activity,” explains Dr. Jinah Yoo, consultant dermatologist at Maylin x Dr Jinah Yoo Dermatology. “This can increase collagen and elastin production, improve blood circulation, and promote skin healing and rejuvenation – making it a great addition to your skin care regimen.”

While many clinics offer microcurrent treatments, these at-home devices won’t be as efficient (for obvious reasons). However, Dr. Yoo believes they can still have an impact. “Home microcurrent devices can provide similar benefits to professional treatments, such as improving skin tone and reducing fine wrinkles, although the results may be less significant. Consistent use, a high-quality device and following the device instructions are key to achieving noticeable results,” he says.

What are the skin care benefits of a microcurrent device?

We mentioned reducing fine lines and improving skin tone above, but I feel one aspect that hasn’t been discussed enough is how it enhances skin care.

“Increasing the performance of skin care products is an easier benefit to achieve with home microcurrent devices,” Dr. Yoo believes. “Microcurrents can increase the absorption of active ingredients in skin care products, improving circulation and promoting deeper skin penetration. This maximizes the effectiveness of the products, leading to improved hydration, nourishment and overall skin health.”

Reaping all the benefits of expensive skin care products seems ideal to us.

That’s not the only physical difference microcurrent devices can make. “These devices can help firm and lift facial muscles, which can provide a slimmer and more contoured appearance. However, the effects are usually temporary and less pronounced compared to professional treatments,” says Dr. Yoo.

However, caution is recommended. “Home microcurrent devices are generally safe, but misuse or overuse can potentially lead to skin irritation, muscle twitches or minor electrical burns. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and consult a dermatologist if you have any skin conditions or underlying conditions. concerns,” says Dr. Yoo.

My NuFACE results

Being a skeptic, I didn’t expect it to work and that’s why I didn’t actually document the start date (my mistake, sorry). If I had to bet, I’d say I’ve been using it for six weeks. On the left is my BN life (before NuFACE), and on the right is after using it continuously for about six weeks.

Before and after using my NuFACE deviceHearst’s owner

I was so impressed with the radiance of my skin after using NuFACE that I didn’t even think about the sculpting effects (I wasn’t 100% sure if these claims were true), but I do think my chin area in particular looks a bit slimmer. Huge victory for NuFace.

For me, the biggest benefit of using this device is that it increases the benefits of my skin care routine. Apart from the questionable toning effects, my skin has become much brighter and softer since using it, and there have been few breakouts – these are the results I can confidently confirm.

It’s safe to say that my NuFACE won’t be covered in dust any time soon.
