New film details director’s move from China to New York in search of a better education for her dyslexic daughter

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — “Confetti” is not only a film about the journey of a little dyslexic girl, it is a love letter from a New York director to his daughter.

Ann Hu’s daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia when she started school in China.

“At that time, I didn’t know what dyslexia was. So I asked, is it a good thing or a bad thing? Is it a blessing or a curse?” » said Hu.

Hu learned everything she could and eventually brought her daughter from China to a special school in New York.

Today, 18-year-old Michelle Hu is succeeding in college studying fashion design.

“I code words differently. When I read, it may say the dog is happy, but I may interpret as if the dog is happy. What I read and see on paper, my mind interprets differently,” said Michelle Hu.

The film was shown around the world. Many countries still don’t have a word for dyslexia, or a way to help.

Ann Hu is quick to point out that this has nothing to do with intelligence or success.

Indeed, Steven Spielberg suffers from dyslexia and it is believed that Albert Einstein also suffered from it.

“The most important thing is that you must overcome internally that you are not less. You have something beautiful within you.” » said Hu.

Michelle is proud of her mother’s film.

“I still think it’s one of the best films she’s ever made. She really portrayed every moment perfectly, thoughtfully and precisely. It was almost like I was seeing my life play out again,” said Michelle Hu.

An estimated 20 percent of the population is dyslexic, or one in five people.
