WhatsApp Multi Device Support: How to use your account on 4 devices

WhatsApp has been updating since the day it entered the market. One of the attractive features of this messaging app is that it will introduce new features every now and then. In 2024, WhatsApp introduced several major features to improve user experience. These new updates include multi-account support, multi-device support, pinned messages, lock screen replies, polls and quizzes, screen sharing and more. Continuing with how to use these features, this article describes WhatsApp’s multi-device feature. (Want to know how to use two accounts on one device, read here.)

Previously, WhatsApp followed the principle that if you wanted to use the application on two different phones, you had to get two different numbers. But 2024 has brought a change here.

What is the multi-device feature in WhatsApp?

You can now use the same WhatsApp account on multiple phones at the same time thanks to multi-device support, also known as companion mode. In this update, the app allows you to connect four different devices using your primary phone. You can use any of these accounts for as long as you want with just one condition. To keep your devices connected, you must log in to your primary phone every 14 days.

Whichever device you choose, whether you connect your phone to 4 different computers or 4 different phones, WhatsApp makes it possible. However, the process of connecting desktops and phones is slightly different.

How to configure multi-device support?

Connecting WhatsApp to your laptop via the Internet is nothing new. Just scan the QR code with your main phone and Voil, all your chats are here. The same can be done if you are using the app on Windows.

However, the main work comes when you want to use different smartphones to connect to your main account. To enable companion mode on your second phone, you need to install the app.

After installation and acceptance of the privacy policy, three dots will appear in the upper right corner of the screen, which will now ask you to enter your phone number. Clicking on these three dots will open a drop-down menu where you can connect this phone as a companion device.

On the next screen, after selecting this option, you will be asked to scan the QR code. And it’s done.

Companion mode also has a few limitations. Live location and add status are not supported on companion phones. Your companion phones will be logged out if you don’t use your primary phone for more than 14 days.
