Real video of Temu warehouse employees?

Law:

The May 2024 video authentically depicts Temu warehouse employees

Rating:

FALSEHOOD

In May 2024, several dozen posts with a video purporting to depict employees of the warehouses of Temu, a Chinese e-commerce company founded in 2022, appeared online.

British news site Daily Mail posted a video on TikTok stating that it “allegedly” features Temu magazine, but as of this writing, Daily Mail has deleted the post. “Nothing is as bright orange as Temu. The Daily Mail knows it’s not Temu magazine, which is why they supposedly included the magazine to avoid getting called out for making things up,” one TikTok user wrote. “I don’t think it was Temu. They only ship in bags, not boxes,” wrote another.

Commenters on other platforms were also quick to question the validity of the claim that the warehouse shown in the photo was actually a Temu warehouse, with some claiming it was more of a sorting facility for a Chinese courier company. “This isn’t Temu,” one Reddit user commented. “This is an old video of a backup at a post office in China before the pandemic.”

We have reviewed the claim and found no evidence that the disputed video depicts Temu magazine. We were unable to determine exactly where and when the video was recorded. We contacted Temu directly, who confirmed that the video contained misinformation. “The magazine shown in the video is in no way affiliated with Temu,” a Temu media representative wrote by email.

Using Google Image Search, the oldest version of the video we found was uploaded to YouTube on May 6, 2024. Unlike other viral video posts, this YouTube video (archived here) has a watermark indicating the Douyin (Chinese TikTok) @ account dys9spfh12vc.

Douyin user @dys9spfh12vc, who appears to have removed the video in question, posted another video on April 20, 2021 (archived here) showing a similar packet processing environment.

In summary, since there is no conclusive evidence that the video in question was recorded at Temu Magazine, it appears that the video was recorded and originally posted by someone who did not claim it was recorded at Temu Magazine, as Temu himself has confirmed that the video was in no way associated with the company, we rate this claim as “false.”
