Broadband Forum, the industry’s global standards development organization, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking TR-069 standard, which paved the way for the open standards organization’s flagship TR-369/User Services Platform (USP).

TR-069 laid the foundation for ubiquitous global Internet access and enabled Internet Service Providers (ISPs) around the world to manage billions of devices.

The Broadband Forum announced that it will no longer make updates to the standard as the TR-369/User Services Platform (USP), based on the TR-069 design, has become the cornerstone of future device management development.

“As we reflect on TR-069’s extraordinary growth and success since its inception in 2004, we must continue to build on its solid foundations as we look to the future and as the baton passes to the USP,” said Jason, chairman of the Broadband Forum Connected Home Walls. “On behalf of the Forum, I would like to express my gratitude to the community of developers, engineers and contributors who have supported and improved the TR-069 standard over the past two decades.”

TR-069 helped ISPs remotely manage customer-premises equipment (CPE) such as modems and routers, and enabled communication between CPEs and automatic configuration servers (ACS). USP builds on this with several improvements and supports IoT devices and offers greater scalability in device management. It provides quick response times to network issues, automates tasks to reduce operational costs, and ensures greater customer satisfaction.

The forum ensured that ISPs had a smooth transition from TR-069 to USP, with the necessary tools and resources to support integration without disrupting existing services.

“The Broadband Forum remains committed to delivering innovation and USP is proof of this, playing a key role in meeting the demands of modern network environments and the spread of the Internet of Things,” said Gavin Young, Vodafone and former technical chair of the Broadband Forum, when TR-069 was first launched published. “As ISPs continue to prioritize user experience and lead in service, USP is poised for the next phase of growth as we transition to more market-responsive and software-driven networks.”

The increasingly used TR-369 (USP) aims to overcome the inherent limitations of TR-069 and support more sophisticated and scalable network management capabilities. USP’s enhanced capabilities include multi-controller support, real-time data notifications, and increased efficiency in managing and controlling all types of connected devices.

“Demand and purchase intentions for advanced devices such as doorbells, door locks and network cameras continue to increase, but this creates a complex and demanding home network for consumers,” said Elizabeth Parks, president and chief marketing officer at Parks Associates . “Half of U.S. households with Internet problems have problems with the quality of their online experience. As the number and dependence on devices in the home increases, consumers are becoming more interested in additional network services that enable network optimization and device control. We believe that moving to USP to support more comprehensive network management requirements is a great step forward for the industry.”
